Dr Neil Hudson MP spoke on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Farming Today’ about the movement of animals across borders now we have left the EU. This was off the back of the House of Commons Environment Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRA), of which Dr Hudson is a member, launching an inquiry into how new regulations will impact on animal welfare and disease control. The inquiry will inform the EFRA Committee which can then in turn make recommendations to Government.
Pets, horses and farm animals are transported across borders and Dr Hudson, as an MP who is a vet representing a rural seat with a big farming and animal footprint, is keen that the health and welfare status of these animals is strengthened as much as possible.
There was also a question about the future of Newton Rigg College. Dr Hudson highlighted its importance to the local economy in training the next generation of farmers and that he recently questioned the Education Secretary on this very matter in the House of Commons.
