Dr Neil Hudson MP warns of climate change danger amid record-breaking heatwave

Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Penrith and The Border, reinforced the need for climate action amid unprecedented high temperatures this week when questioning the COP26 President, Alok Sharma MP, in Parliament.

Extreme heat has led to the UK recording its highest ever temperatures this week, underpinning the necessity for Government to follow through on commitments made at last year’s 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). Dr Hudson’s remarks came during a session of COP Questions where Members can quiz the Government on its climate record.

The Cumbrian MP attended COP26 in Glasgow last year on Nature Day where he joined farmers and rural community representatives to secure new agreements to support the shift to sustainable agriculture while continuing to produce top quality food for the nation.

Dr Neil Hudson MP, asked:

“Does the COP President agree with me that the extreme hot weather this week serves as a stark reminder of the realities and danger of climate change, and the need for the UK and the rest of the world to strengthen their resolve to achieve the objectives set at COP26?”

Alok Sharma MP, replied:

“Mr Speaker, My Hon. Friend is absolutely right, what we have seen over the last couple of days here is what very many millions of people across the world experience on a very very regular basis, and that is why ensuring that the commitments that have been garnered internationally are actually delivered upon, but also, of course, we need to make sure that we do that ourselves.”

Speaking afterwards, Dr Neil Hudson, said:

“I thank the COP26 President, Alok Sharma, for both his considered answer and all the vital work he is undertaking to see the UK achieve its climate objectives.

“From the immediate shocks of disrupted journeys, fires, and the impact on people’s health to more long-term fears surrounding the climate crisis, this week’s extreme temperatures have really brought home the need for resolute action on climate change. Put simply, it is far too hot, and we need to do something about it as soon as possible.

“I was lucky enough to formally represent the people of Penrith and The Border at COP26, hearing first-hand, this nation’s world-leading commitments to tackle climate change. I commend the Government on its record of phasing out fossil fuels and reducing greenhouse gases – now more than ever we need to keep global temperatures down, for our sakes and the sakes of our children and grandchildren.”
