Speaking this week to ITV News, Epping Forest MP Dr Neil Hudson has called on Transport for London (TfL) to take urgent action after a sharp rise in graffiti on the Central Line, impacting both the inside and outside of carriages used by local commuters.
Since his election, Dr Hudson has consistently raised concerns with TfL about Central Line issues affecting Epping Forest residents, including delays, overcrowding, and noise.
However, in recent weeks, many regular Central Line commuters, including Dr Hudson, have noticed a substantial increase in graffiti, both in and outside carriages, raising concerns about safety and the overall passenger experience.
Dr Hudson first reported the graffiti problem to TfL in early May and was assured that removal efforts were underway. However, with the issue persisting, Dr Hudson has renewed calls for stronger measures, such as installing CCTV in carriages, clearer signage, and an increased staff presence on trains to deter antisocial behaviour.
Speaking afterwards, Dr Hudson commented:
“As a regular Central Line user, I know how vital clean, reliable, and safe transport is for Epping Forest folk.
“The recent surge in graffiti is deeply disappointing, especially given the significant investment in the Central Line’s upgrade, which we are yet to see materialise. Our tube carriages now resemble something out of Gotham City.
“I urge TfL and the Labour Mayor of London to step up efforts to tackle this problem urgently to give us the service here in Epping Forest and across London that we deserve.”
