Dr Neil Hudson, Member of Parliament for Epping Forest, has reaffirmed his strong support for grassroots cricket clubs during a Westminster Hall debate in the House of Commons.

A lifelong cricket enthusiast, Dr Hudson plays for the Lords and Commons Cricket Club and played cricket in his younger days at Woodford Green Cricket Club. Speaking in Parliament, he highlighted the vital role that local cricket clubs play in supporting physical and mental well-being, fostering community spirit, and providing opportunities for people of all ages.

Dr Hudson also emphasised in the debate the importance of improving access to international cricket on terrestrial television, arguing that greater visibility of the sport would help inspire young people by giving them access to positive sporting role models and heroes.

During the debate, Dr Hudson said:

“It was a great privilege to serve under the captaincy of the Honourable Member this summer for the Lords and Commons cricket team, in our valiant defeat against Marylebone Cricket Club. I note that, despite that valiant defeat, neither I nor he has received a call-up from Brendon McCullum or Ben Stokes in Adelaide.”

“My constituency is home to some wonderful clubs: Epping, Theydon Bois, Loughton, Buckhurst Hill, Roding Valley and High Beach. Such clubs are the beating heart of our communities. Does the Honourable Member agree that the Government should do all they can to support those fantastic institutions, which offer so many opportunities to people young and old?”

Speaking after the debate, Dr Hudson said:

“Grassroots cricket clubs do far more than produce talented players. They bring communities together, promote healthy lifestyles, and give young folk positive role models.

“I am proud to stand up in Parliament for the fantastic clubs across Epping Forest, and I will continue to press the Government to try to ensure they receive the support they deserve.”
