Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Epping Forest, recently united with Cancer Research UK to support their campaign calling for policies that advance research in the fight against cancer, at their Parliamentary event on the issue.
With cancer currently being the leading cause of death in the UK and more than 500,000 diagnoses a year expected by 2040, Dr Hudson supported calls for the Government to take steps to ensure we as a nation are doing all we can to support timely and effective research into cancer which can hopefully lead to new tests and treatment.
Cancer Research UK, who hosted the event, are calling for measures including eliminating the barriers to faster clinical trials with more streamlined set-up process and improved workforce capacity, attracting international research talent, and ensuring long-term funding for research. This is especially important given findings suggest that every £1 invested in cancer research is estimated to generate £2.80 worth of benefits for the economy.

Following the event, Dr Hudson said:
“As Cancer Research UK are making clear, if we are going to win the fight against cancer, we need cancer research in the UK firing on all cylinders.”
“Those facing cancer in Epping Forest and across the UK can’t afford new treatments to be delayed by avoidable hurdles.”
“Research needs to be properly funded and supported, and internationally collaborative, so more lives can be saved from cancer.”
