Last night (27 April) in the House of Commons Dr Neil Hudson MP voted against the Labour Government’s carry-over motion on the Northern Ireland Troubles Bill, supporting the Conservative plan to scrap the legislation if they are returned to Government.
Dr Hudson’s vote reflects growing concern that the Bill risks reopening deeply sensitive legacy issues while exposing veterans to prolonged and potentially vexatious legal claims, decades after their service.
Conservatives have made clear that, if returned to Government, they will repeal the legislation and replace it with an approach that delivers fairness for veterans while supporting long-term stability in Northern Ireland.
Dr Neil Hudson MP has consistently supported those who served our country being treated with dignity and protected from unnecessary legal jeopardy. The current Bill fails to strike the right balance between accountability and fairness, and risks undermining confidence among veterans and their families.
Dr Neil Hudson MP said:
“I voted against the Northern Ireland Troubles Bill because it risks reopening old wounds and placing unfair legal burdens on those who served our country.”
“Our veterans deserve protection, not the threat of being drawn back vexatiously into legal proceedings decades later.”
“That is why I support the clear commitment that a future Conservative Government will scrap this legislation and bring forward a fairer, more balanced approach.”
