This week, Dr Neil Hudson, Conservative MP for Epping Forest, defended the right for Parliament to protect local businesses from excessive Government overreach, by championing Opposition amendments to the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill, during the Bill’s Remaining Stages in the House of Commons.
The Government’s Product Regulation and Metrology Bill will provide them with sweeping powers to introduce regulation, with reduced insight from Parliament at large. The Conservative Opposition therefore laid down amendments to the Bill that would increase scrutiny of changes to proposed regulations by elected Members of Parliament.
In his interventions, Dr Hudson highlighted that the Government’s damaging economic record on businesses, particularly SMEs, leaves much to be desired, such as the rise in Employers’ National Insurance Contributions, which have made it more costly for employers to hire or retain staff.
Dr Hudson has consistently challenged the Government’s economic approach, holding the Prime Minister to account for his decisions during Prime Minister’s Questions in May, as well as the Chancellor after her Autumn Budget last year. Following the Remaining Stages of the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill, Dr Hudson commented:
“This Labour Government’s economic record sadly leaves much to be desired.”
“The rise in National Insurance Contributions for Employers has forced difficult choices onto employers here in Epping Forest, who must navigate in a more costly environment to keep their businesses afloat.”
"And now with more new worrying legislation, the Government is making things tougher.”
“I will do all I can to ensure the concerns of business across Epping Forest are heard by this Government, who must change course immediately.”
