Dr Neil Hudson, Member of Parliament for Epping Forest and Shadow Environment Minister, visited the Epping reuse shop run by ECCO (Environmental Conservation Co-Operative) to see first-hand how the charity supports vulnerable residents, reduces waste and protects the local environment.
Founded in Harlow in 1995, ECCO now runs reuse shops in Epping, Harlow and Bishop's Stortford. Relying entirely on public donations, the charity sells good-quality furniture, clothing, electricals and household items at affordable prices. All proceeds are reinvested into grants for environmental charities and projects across the region.
Reuse is at the heart of ECCO's environmental mission. By giving unwanted goods a second life, the charity cuts landfill waste and reduces the emissions associated with producing new items, alongside delivering hands-on conservation work and environmental education in the community. During his visit, Dr Hudson met staff and volunteers to learn more about ECCO's environmental initiatives and the impact of its work locally.
As Epping Forest’s MP, Dr Hudson has been a consistent advocate for protecting the natural environment, regularly joining community litter picks across Epping Forest. As Shadow Environment Minister, he has repeatedly pressed the Government to take rural and semi-rural crime more seriously, particularly fly-tipping, which threatens local biodiversity and causes lasting financial and environmental harm to residents and landowners.
