Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Epping Forest and Shadow Defra Minister proudly displayed his support for the animal rescue sector at an event in Parliament hosted by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

The event celebrated the vital role rescues play in caring for animals and highlighted Battersea’s priorities for animal welfare. Dr Hudson, a veterinary surgeon and Shadow DEFRA Minister, was delighted to meet some of Battersea’s canine current and ex-residents, showcasing the potential of rescue animals as pets.

Rescue organisations like Battersea are seeing many animals that have been bred with extreme or unhealthy characteristics, with little regard for animal welfare. Throughout his Parliamentary career, Dr Hudson has consistently raised concerns about responsible breeding and sourcing of pets. He has also been vocal about the need to address the issue of brachycephalic dogs, which often suffer from breathing issues due to their flat faces.

Battersea’s event also discussed the challenges around the illegal importation of dogs and cats and the import of animals with cruel mutilations such as ear cropped dogs. Dr Hudson has consistently campaigned for stronger animal welfare laws to ensure the safeguarding of cats and dogs. Dr Hudson recently co-sponsored The Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill which he supported as Shadow DEFRA Minister at its second reading on 29th November 2024:

Dr Hudson also listened to Battersea’s campaign to promote pet-friendly housing. Dr Hudson has been an ardent campaigner for allowing pet-friendly rentals, recognising that rental restrictions often force pet owners to give up their beloved animals to rescues, and recently discussed this issue in the Chamber, whilst also ensuring that landlords and their properties will be protected.

Following the event, Dr Hudson, MP for Epping Forest said:

“As a vet and MP, I fully recognise the vital work rescues do to help pets and their owners in difficult situations and Battersea is a champion for the best of rescue.

I will continue to support Battersea’s mission in Parliament to tackle issues encountered by rescues, from cracking down on puppy smuggling, eradicating mutilations and supporting more people to find pet-friendly properties.”

Michael Webb, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at Battersea, said:

“Thank you to Dr Hudson for demonstrating his support for rescues.

With new legislation and regulation either already before or due in Parliament imminently, Dr Hudson’s support means that together we can fight to promote the needs of cats and dogs and ensure that the UK is a world leader in companion animal welfare.”
