Epping Forest MP, Dr Neil Hudson, the first veterinary surgeon elected to the House of Commons since 1884, recently reaffirmed his longstanding commitment to equine welfare at an event in Westminster. The event, hosted by World Horse Welfare, focused on combating horse smuggling and promoting the implementation of a robust digital equine ID and traceability system to ensure safer cross-border movement of horses.
A steadfast supporter of World Horse Welfare, Dr Hudson has chaired their annual conferences twice and has consistently called for proactive measures to protect horses globally. In Parliament, he has frequently discussed the importance of introducing a streamlined digital equine identification system to bolster biosecurity, improve traceability, and combat illegal activity such as horse smuggling.
Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Epping Forest, said:
“As both an equine veterinary surgeon and a parliamentarian, ensuring that horses are protected from exploitation and harm is an issue very close to my heart.
“A robust digital equine ID system is not just a technological innovation, but an essential step toward improving biosecurity, traceability, and accountability in equine welfare.
“I will continue to press for this critical reform in Parliament.”
